Sure, a program of regular growth hormones and steroids makes it cheaper (up
to 30% cheaper!) for ranchers to put beef on your table, but knowing some of
the ramifications of such a common feed lot practice makes it impossible for
us to follow such practices. We‘re committed to producing safe beef fit
for our children and yours, even if it costs more to do it.
Why don‘t you just say you are “Organic”? Because that
is a USDA-regulated claim. And we do not believe we should relinquish our
accountability to the government in any way. Also, with USDA regulation for
a term like “Organic” there are potentially inhumane restrictions and requirements.
Such as, if an animal is hurt from something as innocent as scratching
herself against a tree and the cut gets infected, to keep your herd
“Organic” you‘d either have to separate the animal completely from the
herd to treat her with a topical anti-biotic ointment or you‘d have to not treat her at all.
Since cattle are herd animals, we believe it is inhumane to separate the
hurt ones from the herd. When called for, we choose to treat hurt animals
in the best way possible. We think Doc, as a practicing family medical
doctor, is fit to make that call.
Our herd is raised on natural prairie grasses which are higher in protein than alfalfa to ensure the good omegas end up in your beef. The grain gives that old-fashioned taste.
Our herd is registered with the American Angus Association. Our member code is 1141461. Use this link to visit their web site: www.angus.org. Look for “Snow Creek Angus Ranch” in Kansas under the Data Searches/Tools and then Member Lookup menu options. This will show you that Snow Creek Ranch is real and is an acknowledged Angus breeder. Go through the site to see what goes along with the American Angus Association. You will see what you can expect with pure-bred Angus beef.
Genetics and Breeding
We breed our cattle for marbling, rib eye, and tenderness. The Snow Creek Ranch herd is best in breed. And we continually strive for better beef. Here’s how:
The Cows (the girls)

This is Reina. She is Snow Creek Ranch’s pride and joy! Reina is a central part of our proactive, ongoing efforts to improve the herd. She is the #3 cow out of 153,841 for marbling, and Reina has both known tenderness genes. It’s likely these traits will show up in her calves. For example, one of her daughters is the #7 cow out of 153,841 for marbling, and she has both tenderness genes. We acquired Reina from ISU at the National Western Stock Show in Denver in January, 2004.
The Bulls

After searching high and low, we now know the bulls to breed to that will ensure more marbled and more tender beef. Our AI sires are “genetically proven”. This means that the calves they “throw” match predicted birth weight, level of tenderness, level of marbling, and rib eye size to within 80% – 90%. One of our 2 cleanup bulls is in the upper 1% for rib eye size and other great characteristics. So when you buy in bulk you get up to 10% more premium steaks than with other breeds. So you get less burger and other stuff. So you get a better value.
When you order sides and quarters from Snow Creek Ranch, you get to decide how you want your beef processed and wrapped. We assist you with your order, so you’ll get the cuts that fit your family’s eating style. No mystery meat in the dark corners of your freezer.
How can you be sure the meat you get is from our beef? We take a genetic marker from the beef before it even leaves the farm. A few tail hairs make great genetic tags. We keep them on file for 1 year.
You pay Snow Creek Ranch only for the beef you get. We charge based on the weight of the meat you take home not on the hanging weight.
This is not just some marketing gimmick. We track customer feedback with each blood line. Only the blood lines with the best feedback are kept in the Snow Creek Ranch herd. We actually remove blood lines from our herd that get negative customer feedback.
